What is Freeze
Branding?
Freeze branding is a permanent identification method that uses extreme cold to destroy the pigment-producing cells in the hair follicle, resulting in white hair regrowth. It provides a highly visible, professional mark that remains clear for the life of the animal, essential for accurate record-keeping and herd management.
Based in Albury-Wodonga and servicing herds across Victoria and New South Wales, Herdlinx uses specialised equipment and liquid nitrogen to deliver a clean, low-stress finish. We prioritise animal welfare and precision, ensuring every brand is applied correctly to provide a lifetime of reliable identification.

Common questions
Is freeze branding painful for cattle?
Freeze branding is widely regarded as a low-stress, humane alternative to hot iron branding. The cold contact is brief and the sensation passes quickly — animals typically settle as soon as they're released back into the yards.
How long until the freeze brand becomes visible?
Initial whitening begins around 3–4 weeks post-application as new hair regrows without pigment. The brand reaches full clarity after the next moult, usually 6–10 weeks in.
How does freeze branding compare to hot iron branding?
Both leave permanent marks, but freeze branding is far easier to read from a distance, doesn't damage the hide, and is considered significantly less stressful for the animal. The trade-off is a longer wait before the mark becomes fully visible.
